Join us as we continue to explore Mark’s Gospel. In our Bible Study this week we will be reading Mark 11—13. As you prepare, consider these questions:

• The events of these chapters take place in and around the temple in Jerusalem. What was the significance of the temple in Jewish life? What happened to the temple?

• Mark “sandwiches” the cleansing of the temple (11:15-19) between the cursed fig tree (11:12-14, 20-25). What do you think this means?

• From 11:27—12:40 Jesus is in dispute with the Jerusalem leaders. What seems to be the problem?

• How do you understand Mark 13? What is the primary admonition of this passage?

Join us as we explore the heart of Mark’s Gospel: Mark 8:27—10:52. In preparation, consider the following questions:

• What do the disciples fail to understand about what it means that Jesus is the Messiah?

• What does Jesus want the disciples to understand about discipleship?

• What do you think Mark 9:1 means?

• This section contains three “Passion Predictions” (8:31-33; 9:30-32; 10:32-34). How do you think these relate to everything we have seen so far in Mark’s Gospel?

• On the way to Jerusalem Jesus heals a blind man (see Mark 1046-52). Consider the passage in light of 2 Samuel 5:6-8. What might be the significance of this?

This week we will read Mark 6:7-8:26. As you read on your own, consider these questions:

• In Mark 7:3-4 we get a long explanation of ritual washing. What might this tell us about Mark’s audience?

• How is it going for the disciples in this section?

• These chapters are framed by the question of Jesus’s identity (including 8:27-30), and the popular opinion that Jesus is a prophet. Why might people have thought Jesus was a prophet?

• In Mark 6:52 it says the disciples “did not understand about the loaves,” referring back to the feeding of the five thousand in the previous passage. What should they have understood about the loaves?

All CTF women and men, as well as interested teens, are invited to explore the Gospel of Mark with us. This week we will read Mark 3:7—6:6. As you read on your own, consider these questions:

• Pay attention to the big picture in this lengthy section. What is happening as the story continues to unfold?

• What does this passage say about discipleship?

• Chapter 4 gives us a sample of Jesus’s parables. How are the parables functioning in the story?

• In Mark 5:21-43 we have a story within a story. Why do you think Mark does this?

• How does the opening line (1:1) function in the introduction/ in the whole book?

• What does “gospel” mean?

• What role is the Old Testament playing in this passage?

• What connection can you make between the events described here?

• What expectations does this introduction create for the reader?

A celebration for the Feast of St. Bartholomew will be held on the last Friday of the month. We are planning to have brisket, meal is traditional for this day, and potluck sides. There will be a relay race for kids to participate in. The location is TBD.

A Women’s Gathering is being planned for the Feast of St. Mary. Ladies of all ages are invited to a tea party in honor of St. Mary the Virgin. Please bring your favorite mug or tea cup, and the story of why it is significant to you. Come from 9-11 am at the Fernando’s home. Reach out for more information!

Our church family will gather with Lisa at her home to remember and give thanks for Rob on the one year anniversary of his passing. Please let us know if you are able and planning to attend. There will be a guided time to share good and joyful memories of Rob, as well as dessert. Reach out for more information.

Join us this Friday at the Rector’s home to celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration! We will gather at 5 p.m. for prayer, dinner and fellowship. The Hanlons will be making a summer salad with vegetables, fruit, and grilled chicken. We will also have wine to share, as this feast traditionally coincides with the grape harvest at the beginning of August. Please bring a side or dessert to share as well.
